Categories can be used for subdividing or grouping materials. I.e. if you have materials of different variants or materials that can be in different states.

As an example a material named “Screws” has a category named “Type”, in order to be able to specify the type of the screws. Thus the total inventory of the screws or the inventory for a certain type of screws could be viewed.

The category could also be a status where the values for instance could be “Quarantine”, “Discarded” or “Released”.

It is possible to assign up to three categories to a material in order to combine the categories. As an example the first category could be a “Color” (red, green, blue etc.). The second category could be “Shade” and the values for instance “Dark”, “Normal” and “Light”. Thus it’s possible to specify both the color and the shade on a paint transaction.

Create categories in the Edit->Materials window

  1. Selecting the Categories tab
  2. Click the Create category button. Specify a name and a type and click Ok. The Integer and Double types are for future expansion, and currently behaves like the String option.
  3. Still with the category row selected, next click the + or buttons to add possible values of the category. The values supplied here, will be what the values the user can choose between.

Assign category to a material in the Edit->Materials window

  1. Selecting the Materials tab.
  2. In the Settings column double-click the field in the row for the material that needs an assigned category.
  3. The Setting for materials menu opens and one or more categories can be assigned in the Select possible categories section.

Categories are used on material graphs. I.e. in order to see the inventory of a category right click on the graph and select the category and value.

Categories may also be selected as a column on reports.
